Make your own ceramic planters, October 7 - 8 2017

from 199.00

Saturday October 7 2017, 10.15 - 5.30 pm

Sunday October 8, 10.15 am - 5.30 pm

You will make a number of planters, perhaps small enough for a mini cactus or large enough for a favourite houseplant as well as pierced planters to hang up a trailing plant. We will mainly be using pinching and coiling techniques, making larger forms in sections and joining them together. Profiles and surface textures will be particularly important.

Intermediates can stretch themselves by trying more complex designs or a larger piece with more sections.

Welcome to the planters course. It is designed to be suitable for beginners and intermediates so I will demonstrate key techniques to the group as well as 1:1 time with each person to help them improve their skills.

Preparation

To get the most out of your workshop you may find it interesting to look at examples of the type of form we are making and perhaps bring along photos of examples you particularly like. Once you start making you will discover the endless decisions to be made about width, height, angle, curve, proportion etc and it can be helpful to have some reference to what sort of shapes appeal to you.

You may like to browse my pinterest boards for ideas: https://uk.pinterest.com/janesarre/

We will be working with constructed and carved textures that can be formed with different inplements or tools that could be used to shape or scoop into the surface. Almost anything can be used to shape or press into clay so bring along a range of different things, (eg, sticks, metal implements, combs, rope etc etc) and have some fun experimenting.

On the day

  • We will be starting promptly so please try to arrive in good time so you have time to settle & get ready. If you are going to be late, don't worry I will help you catch up, but we will be wondering where you are so please text me if you can, the number is below. If you are unable to attend part of a day for some reason please just let me know so I can help you catch up.

  • I will have a plan of what I want to show you, and what you will be doing each session, but if anything is not clear at any time please do just ask. The most important thing is that you get something out of the time, so if it all gets a bit mystifying or is not working for you for any reason please let me know so that we can try and find a way to improve it for you. If you have a particular form you want to make that is different to what I suggest you are very welcome to do so and I will do my best to support you with it.

Finishing your work

At the end of the workshop you will have a chance to review your work and decide which pieces you want to keep. I will then glaze and fire these pieces for you. I will then pack them up and post them to you.

    • 5kg of clay

    • Bisc firing

    • Glaze materials

    • My time to glaze your work
