We had a little holiday in Edinburgh last week. It felt in the days beforehand to even consider going away as this is a super-busy time of year making stick for Christmas. But it was booked - and to coincide with my birthday so (with some trepidation) I packed my bags & headed north.
Immediately we arrived and I was able to stop it became obvious just how much that break was needed! It's so easy to get caught in the treadmill of busyness and stress, and the deeper into the cycle I am the less I'm aware of it.
I am very grateful we had the foresight to book it back in January because the R&R was just what I needed to recharge.
This was the view from our living room window, out over the River Almond (!) and the Firth of Forth. I love the sea so having all that water on the doorstep was a real pleasure.
Whilst exploring in town I also enjoyed browsing in the Word Power bookshop, it had such varied and interesting stock to discover at every turn. As a bit of a bookaholic on a tight budget I don't often let myself go into bookshops so this one was a special treat. I eventually whittled my choices down to 2, including "Show your work" by Austin Kleon. Its a quick read but full of insights and inspirations so heartily recomended to any creative types out there.
It's easy to forget the value of not working, but the week was a great reminder of the importance of rest to balance the busyness, and of new views and perspectives to get the whiskers twitching and the creative juices flowing.
