A little over a year ago I reached the point where Jane Sarre Ceramics - the business needed a logo. I was working with Mark Evans to work up business cards and signage etc, and it all needed that logo to finish it off.
Before getting into it with Mark I had had a go by myself, drawing on an old design of my initials and a bird that now seems prescient but at the time was not a big deal...
Whilst briefing Mark I also did a lot more doodles, one of which, based on a J we considered for a while. We also considered a bird as a second option.
For me the bird was always a seagull. I lived in Brighton for a while and developed a fondness for seagulls, they have such strength character and I love to see them soar. For me they symbolise individuality and freedom.
My move into ceramics was undertaken very much as a deliberate choice to re-connect with my creativity and create a new life that was more about who I really am as a person, free from the felt obligation to do what was expected by others and instead focusing on what made my spirits soar.
The bird mark therefore turned out to be a good choice in visually representing my new enterprise. Each time I see it it serves as a good reminder to be my own strong character and fly free.
